French lab Mistral AI has secured $830 million in debt financing to build a new data center near Paris, according to reports from Reuters and CNBC. This move is part of the company's broader strategy to scale its infrastructure across Europe, with a focus on AI innovation and autonomy.
Last year, Mistral AI announced its intention to build the data center, with CEO Arthur Mensch stating that the company would explore different financing options. The new facility in Bruyères-le-Châtel is planned to be operational by the second quarter of 2026. In addition to this, Mistral AI recently announced a $1.4 billion investment in Sweden to expand its AI infrastructure, including additional data centers. The company has set an ambitious goal to deploy 200 megawatts of compute capacity across Europe by 2027.
Mistral AI's investment in infrastructure is driven by the surging demand from governments, enterprises, and research institutions for customized AI environments, reducing their reliance on third-party cloud providers. As Mensch stated to CNBC, 'Scaling our infrastructure in Europe is critical to empower our customers and to ensure AI innovation and autonomy remain at the heart of Europe. We will continue to invest in this area, given the surging and sustained demand.'
Mistral AI has raised over €2.8 billion ($3.1 billion) in funding to date from a range of investors including General Catalyst, ASML, a16z, Lightspeed, and DST Global, as per data from Crunchbase.
This significant debt raise by Mistral AI highlights the growing appetite for investments in AI infrastructure, especially in Europe, where there is a push to maintain technological sovereignty. The company's expansion plans underscore the importance of data centers in supporting the growing computational needs of AI applications and services.
