Beijing-based AI startup Moonshot AI has secured $2 billion in its latest funding round, catapulting its valuation to $20 billion. This represents a meteoric rise for the company, which was valued at just $4.3 billion at the end of 2025.
The lab has raised a staggering $3.9 billion in just the last six months. Driven by API usage and paid subscriptions, Moonshot reported an annual recurring revenue (ARR) of over $200 million as of April 2026.
Founded in 2023 by former Meta and Google researcher Yang Zhilin, Moonshot AI has gained global traction through its Kimi series of "open-weight" models.
The open-weight Kimi K2.5 model recently rivaled top-tier benchmarks from OpenAI and Anthropic, specifically in coding.
Their latest iteration, Kimi K2.6, is currently the second most-used LLM on the OpenRouter distribution platform.
Moonshot is at the forefront of a surging Chinese AI market. While Western rivals often hold larger cash reserves, Chinese labs like Moonshot, DeepSeek (seeking a $45B valuation), and Zhipu AI are seeing massive demand from users looking for high performance at lower inference costs.
Moonshot's Kimi models now stand as primary competitors to global giants like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, alongside domestic rivals like ByteDance’s Doubao and Alibaba’s Qwen.
