Paraform, an AI startup, has achieved a 10x'd increase in revenue by 2025 by taking a different approach compared to other AI startups. Instead of replacing human recruiters, Paraform has paid out over $50 million to them and worked with customers like Palantir, Rippling, and Decagon.

John Kim, the founder and CEO of Paraform, shares how they successfully 10x'd its revenue in 2025 by taking a counter-intuitive approach to the AI recruitment trend.

The Core Strategy: Human-First Over AI-Only

While many startups aim to replace recruiters with AI, Kim argues that AI has actually made hiring noisier and less personal.

  • The Scarcity Problem: Five years ago, it took ~500 emails to make one engineering hire; today, because of AI automation, it takes 5,000.

  • The Solution: Paraform focuses on trust, access, and relationships by empowering independent recruiters rather than replacing them. They have paid out nearly $50 million to human recruiters on their platform.

The "3-Year Timeline" Philosophy

A pivotal moment in Kim’s life occurred at age 18 when a health scare led him to believe he might only have a few years to live.

  • This shifted his mindset from a "65-year timeline" to a "3-year timeline", creating the urgency needed to drop out of college and start his own company.

  • He continues to use this "false alarm" as a blessing that forces him to prioritize what truly matters.

Pivots and Persistence

The journey to success was not linear, involving several major hurdles:

  • Two Failed Ideas: They initially tried web-scraping for talent and a referral marketplace, both of which failed to gain traction.

  • The Turning Point: They realized that independent recruiters were their most active user group, leading to the current marketplace model.

  • Near-Death Experience: While working out of his old college library in Australia, Kim faced a visa rejection that almost prevented him from returning to the US and killed the company.

The company’s conviction was solidified when they filled a Director of Engineering role for Hightouch in just 1.5 months—a role that had been vacant for 18 months. This success led to a seed round where they received a term sheet the same day as their first investor meeting, without even having a pitch deck.

John's Advice: Don't just find a better problem; understand your current problem deeper. Dig until you hit the root cause, rather than constantly switching ideas.
