Anjney Midha

Founder & CEO, AMP PBC / Venture Partner, a16z at AMP PBC & a16z

Anjney represents the extreme ‘compute is power’ line: he wrote one of the first checks to Anthropic when almost everyone said no, has consistently concentrated early ownership in the teams actually advancing the frontier, and is now trying to structurally fix the broken compute market so independent labs can progress at near-big-lab efficiency.
BackgroundStanford University (Undergraduate & Bioinformatics Graduate Research); taught security-at-scale courses at Stanford CS, currently Visiting Scientist.

Inception

In 2021, he was one of the earliest angel/early investors in Anthropic. He introduced Dario and Daniela Amodei to 22 Sand Hill Road VC firms; 21 explicitly passed. Convinced that scaling laws would hold, he backed Anthropic with both capital and compute when almost no one else would. That experience solidified his core thesis: compute and talent culture are the true master bottlenecks of the AI era.

Compute is power. Turn fragmented GPUs into a public utility for frontier builders.
Core Inception Belief

The current AI compute market is fundamentally broken through fragmentation, low utilization, and rigid multi-year debt contracts. The true alpha lies in coupling capital with high-efficiency, schedulable compute grids.

Day-Zero Value Creation

Massive compute grid access (AMP / Oxygen architecture), research talent network, executive hiring, culture & governance alignment, and long-term board partnership.

Core Theses & Mental Models

1. Compute & infrastructure mismatch: The GPU market is broken

Scaling laws continue to hold, but the commercial GPU market wastes enormous capacity through severe fragmentation, rigid multi-year debt contracts, and poor cluster utilization. Massive alpha lies in turning raw compute into an independent, schedulable utility grid so that independent frontier research labs can run high-throughput experiments at near-big-tech efficiency without taking on toxic debt.

2. Culture & talent mismatch: Culture is the master bottleneck

In frontier AI, culture is the master bottleneck. An authentic, mission-aligned research culture attracts the strongest algorithmic minds in the world, and research breakthroughs inevitably follow talent density. Anthropic’s ability to assemble seven world-class co-founders during inception was a direct function of shared safety conviction and talent gravity rather than corporate bureaucracy.
