Ali Partovi

Founder & CEO at Neo

Partovi is the ‘earlier than inception’ line: he does not underwrite this year’s AI narrative; he underwrites the 19-year-old who can still write clean code on paper, then waits for that person to throw away the first idea and build the category.
BackgroundHarvard AB and SM in Computer Science. Grew up in Tehran and the US; early engineer who co-founded LinkExchange (sold to Microsoft) and iLike (sold to MySpace).

Inception

Early in his career, he passed on a meeting with Max Levchin before PayPal because the initial crypto-beam idea seemed unproven, and watched countless “right market, wrong founder” failures. His conclusion: sector forecasts and top-down macro decks break, but outlier technical talent compounds forever. In 2017 he launched Neo to identify and support exceptional engineers as undergraduates—years before incorporation.

Core Inception Belief

A true people capitalist: discovery rights are established through multi-year community trust, handwritten coding evaluations, and uncompromising founder alignment.

Day-Zero Value Creation

Elite engineering talent network, direct mentorship from tech icons, zero-friction capital, and heavy follow-on reserves across every round.

Core Theses & Mental Models

1. Discovery timing: People are visible years before markets

Most venture funds arrive after a company incorporates and constructs a pitch narrative. Neo screens students at 18–20 with pen-and-paper coding evaluations and years of community mentorship. The investment in Cursor was not a macro thesis on “the AI IDE market”; it was underwriting Michael Truell, whom Ali had known since his freshman year in 2019 as a generational talent.

2. Thesis skepticism: V1 pitch decks are disposable

Detailed VC macro theses are mostly backward-looking noise. Cursor’s original inception pitch was a CAD and hardware autocomplete tool. What Neo underwrote was the founders’ raw velocity, intellectual honesty, and ability to pivot toward a massive category when the model capability shifted, rather than slide one of the deck.
