Anthropic, a company specializing in AI technology, has announced the acquisition of Vercept, a Seattle-based AI computer interface builder, for an undisclosed amount. This strategic move comes on the heels of Anthropic's unveiling of Claude Sonnet 4.6, its most advanced model yet for computer usage.
Vercept's Background and Achievements
Vercept was founded in 2024 by a team of former Allen Institute for AI (AI2) researchers, including Matt Deitke, Kiana Ehsani, Ross Girshick, Luca Weihs, and Oren Etzioni. The startup gained prominence after launching its flagship product, Vy, a cross-platform AI agent that allows users to control their computers using natural language for app navigation and content management. Vercept has successfully raised over $50 million in funding, including a $16 million round in January 2025, with notable investors such as Fifty Years VC founding partner Seth Bannon, Point Nine Capital, AI2 Incubator, and Madrona.
Not all members of Vercept's founding team were in favor of the acquisition. Oren Etzioni expressed his disappointment on LinkedIn, stating that Vercept was 'throwing in the towel' and giving customers 30 days to migrate off the platform. Vy is scheduled to shut down on 25 March. Etzioni also criticized the startup's board, led by lead investor Seth Bannon and CEO Kiana Ehsani, for lacking product and business expertise.
Despite the controversy, Anthropic continues to expand its offerings. Last December, Anthropic acquired Bun, a coding toolkit, to accelerate Claude Code. More recently, on 24 February, Anthropic partnered with DocuSign to integrate Claude Cowork, allowing DocuSign users to manage agreements using natural language prompts.
What This Means for the AI Industry
The acquisition of Vercept signifies Anthropic's commitment to enhancing its AI products and expanding its market presence. With the integration of Vercept's technology, Anthropic's Claude product is expected to see improvements in its agentic abilities, further solidifying Anthropic's position in the competitive AI landscape.
